Psychology careers

If you wish to become a practising psychologist, you will need a combination of practical experience and further specialist training after you graduate. This might mean working as an assistant psychologist or in other roles related to the area of psychology that interests you.

If you want to become a clinical or an educational psychologist you would also need to complete the appropriate three-year doctorate programme.

Career paths in other areas of psychology usually require a related one-year MSc programme, for example an MSc in forensic psychology or an MSc in occupational psychology.

Many psychology graduates choose not to enter the psychological professions. Their degrees take them into a wide range of careers where they can apply their skills of report writing, data analysis, computing and communication skills. Such careers include:

  • management and administration of all kinds
  • HR
  • banking and finance
  • social work
  • teaching
  • the media
  • librarianship
  • marketing

In many areas an understanding of the behaviour of groups and individuals is particularly valuable.
