Student in a practical session This foundation year is for students who wish to study engineering at Newcastle but who do not have mathematics and/or science at the appropriate level for direct entry. This will provide you with the knowledge you need to progress to one of our three- or four-year engineering degrees.

The foundation year can give students with proven ability in other subjects the opportunity to become engineers. It is also appropriate for applicants with technical or vocational qualifications and for applicants from different educational systems.

We encourage you to apply for the degree with a foundation year that is related to the particular engineering subject you wish to study. However, if you are not sure yet where your interests lie then you may apply to this general Engineering with Foundation Year. This allows you to delay your choice of engineering discipline until the end of the foundation year.

Alternatively, you may apply directly to one of our foundation years in:

+ BEng or MEng?

On successful completion of your foundation year you are guaranteed entry to an engineering degree programme at Newcastle. We offer engineering degrees at two levels:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) – three years in length
  • Master of Engineering (MEng) – four years in length, and allows you to gain a greater depth and breadth of knowledge in the relevant engineering discipline

All of our engineering degrees are professionally accredited by the relevant professional engineering institution and both the BEng and MEng provide a pathway to becoming a Chartered Engineer. This is one of the most recognised international engineering qualifications.

Our Master of Engineering (MEng) degrees are considered a more direct route to becoming a Chartered Engineer as they satisfy all of the academic requirements to achieve this professional qualification (CEng). This means you do not have to undertake any further study on the route to chartered status.

Our Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degrees can also lead to Chartered Engineer status later in your career though you will need to undertake a period of further study, for example an accredited or approved Master’s degree, or appropriate further learning to Master’s level.

A BEng is also suitable for international students who don’t need British Chartered Engineer status.

Find out more about the benefits of becoming a Chartered Engineer on the Engineering Council's website.
