This foundation year is for students who wish to study Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Newcastle but do not have mathematics and/or science at the appropriate level for direct entry.
This will provide you with the knowledge you need to progress to one of our three-year engineering degrees:
The foundation year can give students with proven ability in other subjects the opportunity to become engineers. These courses are also appropriate for applicants with technical or vocational qualifications and for applicants from different educational systems.
If you are not sure which engineering discipline you are interested in, you should apply for our general Engineering with Foundation Year degree, which allows you to delay your choice of engineering discipline until the end of the foundation year.
Electrical Engineering at Newcastle ranks in the top 200 universities in the world in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.
Contact hours are made up of lectures, laboratory sessions and tutorials. Up to 10 hours will consist of practical sessions in our laboratories where you will take part in experiments and project work.
Assessment is by in-course assessment such as laboratory reports and tutorial exercises, or by examinations. Teaching and assessment methods may vary from module to module; more information can be found in our individual module listings.

On successful completion of your foundation year you are guaranteed entry to an engineering degree programme at Newcastle. We offer engineering degrees at two levels:
All of our engineering degrees are professionally accredited by the relevant professional engineering institution and both the BEng and MEng provide a pathway to becoming a Chartered Engineer. This is one of the most recognised international engineering qualifications.
Our Master of Engineering (MEng) degrees are considered a more direct route to becoming a Chartered Engineer as they satisfy all of the academic requirements to achieve this professional qualification (CEng). This means you do not have to undertake any further study on the route to chartered status.
Our Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degrees can also lead to Chartered Engineer status later in your career though you will need to undertake a period of further study, for example an accredited or approved Master’s degree, or appropriate further learning to Master’s level.
A BEng is also suitable for international students who don’t need British Chartered Engineer status.
