This foundation year is for students who wish to study marine technology at Newcastle but do not have mathematics and/or science at the appropriate level for direct entry.
It will provide you with the knowledge you need to progress to one of our three- or four-year Marine Technology degrees:
The foundation year can give students with proven ability in other subjects the opportunity to become engineers. It is also appropriate for applicants with technical or vocational qualifications and for applicants from different educational systems.
If you are not sure which engineering discipline you are interested in, you should apply for the general Engineering with Foundation Year degree, which allows you to delay your choice of engineering discipline until the end of the foundation year.
Your programme of study includes lectures, small group teaching, and laboratory classes. Outside of taught classes you should aim to work a further 20 hours a week on tutorial; preparation, writing up notes, and completing laboratory reports. Further information can be found on our undergraduate web pages about the approach to teaching and learning at Newcastle University.
Some modules include in-course assessment such as laboratory reports and tutorial exercises; others are assessed by traditional examinations at the end of the semester. Teaching and assessment methods may vary from module to module, more information can be found in our individual module listings.
On successful completion of your Foundation Year you are guaranteed entry to an engineering programme at Newcastle. We offer engineering degrees at two levels:
All of our engineering degrees are professionally accredited by the relevant professional engineering institution and both the BEng and MEng provide a pathway to becoming a Chartered Engineer. This is is one of the most recognisable international engineering qualifications.
Our Master of Engineering (MEng) degrees are considered a more direct route to becoming a Chartered Engineer as they satisfy all of the academic requirements required to achieve this professional qualification (CEng). This means you do not have to undertake any further study on the route to chartered status.
Our Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degrees can also lead to Chartered Engineer status later in your career though you will need to undertake a period of further study, for example an accredited or approved Master’s degree, or appropriate further learning to Master’s level.
A BEng is also suitable for international students who don’t need British Chartered Engineer status.
Find out more about the benefits of becoming a Chartered Engineer on the Engineering Council's website.
