Student lecture Study economics at Newcastle and you will soon be learning about how society allocates scarce resources between the competing claims on their use, both now and for future generations.

Economics at Newcastle covers economic theory and policy relating to issues in Britain, Europe and around the world. You will gain the analytical tools, concepts and quantitative techniques necessary to understand modern economics and to be able to identify problems, predict outcomes and evaluate policies.

This degree equips you with an understanding of economic issues in modern society and of the global and national settings in which economic activities take place.

In Stage 3, you choose from a wide range of optional modules, allowing you to develop in-depth, specialist knowledge in specific areas of economics.

Quality and ranking

Economics at Newcastle is highly regarded, achieving a 90% overall student satisfaction score in the 2012 National Student Survey.

Teaching and assessment

Modules are taught via lectures and seminars. Assessment is mainly through unseen examinations at the end of each semester (January and June). However, a proportion of your marks will also be based on in-course assessment of essays and projects.

Study abroad

You may apply to spend Stage 2 studying Economics at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. This is an optional opportunity which counts directly towards your final degree mark. Places are available on a competitive basis.

You will be part of a global community in the Business School, with staff and students representing 69 different countries. You will also have the chance to have a say in how the Business School is run through initiatives such as the Board of Students.
