Care Leaver Bursaries and Financial Support
We offer a range of support to students who are care leavers.
If you have experienced Local Authority Care for a period of at least three months during the 10 years prior to entering Newcastle University you will receive financial support from the University, depending on your eligibility for the various awards available:
Newcastle University Care Leaver Bursary
If you are not eligible for any of the awards listed above, you will be considered for a Newcastle University Care Leaver Bursary of £1,000 per year throughout your course.
Care Leaver Bursaries are not always appropriate for care leavers who have had a very limited experience of care, or whose experience of care was many years previously. In order to ensure bursaries are allocated to the most suitable students, the following criteria must be met. (These are based on the University’s experience and on consultation with colleagues in other universities and Local Authority Leaving Care Teams).
Award Criteria:
- Applicants must register as students of Newcastle University for the academic year in question to receive an award.
- To be eligible, students must have been in care, or under a Care Order, for a period of at least three months within the ten years prior to commencing their University course.
- Students must not have been living independently for longer than five years prior to starting University.
- Students must have applied for the maximum statutory funding to which they are entitled from the Student Loans Company unless funded by other public funds for these costs (eg fees).
- All applicants must attach a copy of all pages of their Student Finance England (or equivalent) entitlement letter for 2013/14 Student Loans Company funding.
- Exceptional cases that do not meet these criteria will be considered on an individual basis.
- The decision of Newcastle University on all applications will be final.
