Student Fees Exceptions at Newcastle

If you entered university in 2011 or earlier and take a leave of absence, or other break, which will delay your return to study until 2012 or beyond, please read on to find out how the recent fees and funding changes will impact you.

This does not apply to students who are entering university in 2012 or later, for example, through deferred entry.

1. You will remain a student of the University and will continue to pay the lower fee (pre-2012 fee) until the end of your studies if you are:

  • registered on an intercalating year (eg studying abroad or undertaking a year in industry as a formal stage of your programme)
  • an MBBS or BDS student intercalating onto another Newcastle degree programme - undergraduate or postgraduate
  • taking an agreed leave of absence, for up to a maximum of one year (to undertake a year in industry which is not a formal part of your programme)
  • taking an agreed leave of absence, due to illness or exam failure
  • an MBBS student intercalating to a different UK Higher Education Institution
  • an EU student who has undertaken a Certificate or Diploma programme at INTO Newcastle University (eg equivalent to a Foundation Year or the first year of an undergraduate degree) leading to the award of university academic credit, and intend to progress to a Newcastle University degree programme (see exception below)
  • transferring from one subject at Newcastle University to another (this includes students who progress normally from year one in the first subject to year two in the second subject and those who are required to restart their first year, in the new subject).

2. You will fall under the new fee conditions if you withdraw from your course of study at another university and apply to begin a new programme at Newcastle University.

However, if you complete a stage of study at another UK University and transfer to the subsequent stage of study at Newcastle University, you will be deemed to be continuing on a single coherent programme and, as such, will continue to pay the lower fee until the end of your studies.

If your transfer is part of a formal agreement (eg MBBS students who have completed Phase I of their course at Durham University’s Queen Campus, or Music students joining a Music degree from Newcastle College) you will will continue to pay the lower fee until the end of your studies.

3. If you are an Architecture or Town Planning student fulfilling a professional accreditation requirement for work experience, you may take time out between your programmes of study and return on the lower fee (eg Architecture students between the BA and the MArch). Please note:

  • the time out is for a maximum period of three years
  • this protection will also be offered to students of other universities transferring to Newcastle for their continued study

4. There may be extenuating circumstances where further relief is appropriate. These will be decided on a case-by-case basis by the Academic Registrar.
