Student Drama and Film

Get hands on acting experience and take in thought-provoking world cinema on campus.

Students acting in costume

We have a very active student drama scene, giving you the chance to act, direct, get involved backstage or design the sets.

Newcastle University Theatre Society (NUTS) has over 200 members involved in:

  • acting
  • crewing
  • costume and make-up
  • set design
  • lighting and sound
  • producing and directing

A typical year for NUTS includes 12 major productions as well as a one-off musical night, comedy sketch shows and a one-month run at the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

We also have a Gilbert and Sullivan Society, which performs an operetta each year.

If you’d prefer to simply be part of the audience there's a whole host of theatres on the University’s doorstep showing independent theatre, West End shows, ballets, operas and comedy.

Film lovers can see mainstream and art house cinema in the city. You can also enjoy monthly independent political films in Newcastle’s Culture Lab. The Cinema Politica Newcastle screenings give you the chance to enjoy alternative, independent films with like-minded folk. They are followed by short lectures from key academic speakers.
