Aims

The module aims to develop students’ skills of analysis and evaluation through the use of case studies in business, accounting and finance. The case studies will draw on material from across the degree programme and will encourage students to apply knowledge to a realistic business situation and draw on a range of disciplines.

Outline Of Syllabus

The students will, initially, be given guidance on approaching case studies and integrating knowledge. This will be achieved by guiding students through case studies comparable to the case study to be assessed. These "mock" case studies shall be approached as both group-based exercises and individual exercises.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Lectures will be used to provide a framework and introduce the material, but much student learning will take place through reading and analysing case studies. The current size of the year group does facilitate a more interactive approach during lectures with some discussion of the material covered and issues raised. Students will have the opportunity to develop their understanding and judge their progress in these sessions. Some sessions will consist of student-centred activities using case studies. All students will have studied and discussed the case studies either individually or in groups (as appropriate) prior to the sessions.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

This module is not so much about acquiring new knowledge, but about applying it in an interdisciplinary way. Thus it is appropriate to assess the module through an examination containing unseen questions based on a case study which will be made available in advance of the assessment date. Students can prepare, but their ability to think on their feet is still being assessed.

This is consistent with the learning outcomes for the module which are concerned with applying relevant knowledge to a business given its circumstances.
