CHY1402 : Analytical Methods and their Applications

Semester 2 Credit Value: 10
ECTS Credits: 5.0

To introduce the basic aspects of organic spectroscopy, infra-red spectroscopy and identify
compounds from their spectra. Students will also be introduced to the Woodward-Feiser rules which
include conjugated diene correlations and aromatic compounds. To teach students how to use ChemDraw for the drawing of structures and reaction schemes. To introduce experimental design and to evaluate ‘real’ chemistry data and critically evaluate spectra.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Knowledge and understanding are acquired through lectures. Students will practice worked examples of
spectroscopy and will gain experience in computer applications through the chemical simulation exercises. Experience of interpretation of real chemical problems.

Assessment Methods

The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners

Other Assessment
Description Semester When Set Percentage Comment
Prob solv exercises2M67Spectroscopy and Data analysis of real chemical data - multi choice class test. 90 minutes.
Computer assessment2M33ChemDraw - Computer based exercise (staff marked). 60 minutes.
Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The in-course assessed work allows the student to practise and consolidate the lecture material and allows the student and the academic subject tutor to monitor progress towards the learning outcomes.
