To provide the student with a thorough grounding in the principles of thermodynamics.
To introduce applications of thermodynamics to real chemical engineering situations.
To ensure all students can approach thermodynamic analysis of systems in a logical and methodological manner.
To establish the fundamentals of chemical engineering thermodynamics such that they can be applied to a range of processes and systems commonly encountered by chemical engineers. To teach the principles involved in the thermodynamic analysis of both chemical processes and process equipments to provide a strong grounding required for system design. To provide the background so the thermodynamic analysis of unknown systems can be approached in a logical and methodological manner.
Outline Of Syllabus
Fundamentals of thermodynamics, The First Law, Properties of Matter, Equations of State, The Energy Balance, Entropy, The Second Law, The Entropy Balance, Control Volume Analysis, Thermodynamics of flow processes, Steam Tables, The Rankine Cycle, Thermochemistry, Equilibrium Reactions, Criteria for equilibrium, Phase equilibrium, Electrochemistry, Case Study.

Lectures provide required knowledge base.
Tutorials enhance the understanding of the knowledge base and develop practice of problem solving skills.
Group learning is in the form of a case study which reinforces concepts, teaches initiative and links a knowledge from related modules across Stage 1.
The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
Examination will test knowledge gained and problem solving skills. In-course assessment will test the attainment of the remaining intended skills outcomes. The Group report and presentation are assessed as one component, with one mark returned.
