Aims

To give student a good understanding on
•       Why materials degrade
•       Different mechanisms of materials failure
•       How it is dependent on the environment and ambient chemistry
•       How can we predict if it will degrade
•       Kinetics of degradation
•       How to measure the kinetics of degradation
•       Standard methods of protection against degradation

And a good appreciation of
•       How different mechanical and chemical conditions can increase degradation/failure (Dr T. Joyce)
•       What specialist techniques are available to characterise them in Nuclear (Dr Nouraei) or off-shore structures

Materials compatibility, degradation and corrosion
Definitions of different kinds of corrosion and corrosion failure – Health and Safety Implications
Thermodynamics and electrochemical materials chemistry
The electrochemical series and stability diagrams
Pourbaix Diagrams for materials stability
Electrochemical kinetics and corrosion rates
Corrosion Protection
Theoretical analysis of corrosion
Practical demonstration of corrosion failure
Specialist Lectures 1 – Materials under Stress (failure of implants)
Specialist Lectures 2 – Materials under stress (Nuclear, Offshore)

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Technical understanding of materials stability requires the ability to understand how theory and practice are related. Therefore lectures covering the context, theory and applications will be delivered. In addition practical demonstrations will show how measurements of these processes are performed. The computing assessment will show how they can use e-learning and data gathering to assess materials stability. This also shows the drive and independent learning abilities of the student.

The written exam shows that the student has understood the importance of materials stability and is able to comprehend and use the theoretical methods of analysis to compute the rates of corrosion and how to stop them. The assignment tests a deeper understanding of the thermodynamic relationships for materials stability.
