To introduce students to the relevant technologies used to create modern, database-driven websites, and to enable them to start to construct such sites themselves.
The module will provide an introduction to appropriate, current languages and their advanced features (e.g PHP, Ruby), toolkits (e.g. Bootstrap, Foundation), template engines (e.g. Twig, Smarty), and server technologies (e.g. Apache, node.js). We will also explore advanced aspects of the HTTP protocol and issues of Client v Server implementation will be discussed.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Techniques and theory are presented in lectures. Supervised practicals in a PC cluster room provide experience of writing programs and using PCs with help available. Further practical work takes place during the private study hours.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
This module has a strong technological focus, and the coursework reflects this. There are two assignments. The first asks the students to produce a storyboard for a data-driven web application, and the second is for them to develop the site they have storyboarded. This allows them to experience the process of designing, structuring and creating a modern website. Feedback on the storyboard will help guide and reframe their implementation. The coursework is quite demanding, and therefore has a high weighting, but it is designed to complement and enhance students' understanding of the material taught in lectures. The exam requires students to answer two out of three questions in which they are required to demonstrate their understanding of some core aspects of the module.
Study abroad students may request to take their exam before the semester 1 exam period, in which case the length of the exam may differ from that shown in the MOF.
N.B. This module has both “Exam Assessment” and “Other Assessment” (e.g. coursework). If the total mark for either assessment falls below 35%, the maximum mark returned for the module will normally be 35%.
