Aims

This module is designed to introduce students to many aspects of UK and international business operations. It is targeted at preparing students to enter Newcastle University or other HEIs to study a wide range of business degrees at undergraduate level. Through a mixture of lecture delivery and small group seminar interaction, students will be guided towards understanding both theoretical and practical topics in the study of business. The module does not require previous study in the subject although the curriculum will allow for those with prior experience to also be stretched and challenged. The module’s specific aims are:

•       To provide students with an introduction to the concepts and principles of business
•       To encourage students to consider theoretical concepts in business and apply them to case study examples in the UK and overseas
•       To help students understand key features of business in the UK and to get them used to the academic/cultural references to these in their reading and wider learning
•       To improve student familiarity with the lexical variety in the study of business

Introduction to key concepts in marketing
Introduction to human resource management and organisational behaviour
Current themes in business which may vary from time to time e.g. corporate governance; CSR; entrepreneurship; ethical issues; environmental issues

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Lectures are used to introduce material to students and expose theories and concepts. Seminars are used to discuss issues in business and develop skills through discussion, presentation etc. Tutorials are used to deal with issues which may be causing students problems.

The assessment package has been designed to provide opportunities for formative feedback and to develop important skills, whilst at the same time exposing students to unseen examination questions of various types to help them get accustomed to this mode of assessment. The examinations also allow coverage of the broad range of the syllabus and constitute an appropriate way to assess the acquisition of basic knowledge and understanding.
