The module aims to provide a detailed understanding of the fundamental and applied aspects of the nutrition of domestic animals (farm livestock and companion animals) together with how nutrition influences and is influenced by growth and other physiological activities. The push-pull inter-relationship between nutrition and growth will be explored.

Why do animals need nutrients ? Formulating rations
Partition of nutrients : Maintenance, growth, reproduction, lactation
Homeostasis, Energy balance

Energy and energy evaluation systems
Consideration of energy levels , supply from feeds, animal requirements
Examples from farm (pig, poultry, ruminant) and companion animals (horse, dog, cat)

Protein and protein evaluation systems
Consideration of protein , supply from feeds, animal requirements
Examples from farm (pig, poultry, ruminant) and companion animals (horse, dog, cat)

Principles of control, Prediction

Understanding and measuring growth

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Much of the solid principles / theories on nutrition and growth are best delivered by formal lecture and small teaching groups. Fieldwork allows students to connect the theoretical aspects of this module with the practical application. More applied aspects of growth and nutrition will be approached by way of student seminars.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The practical ration formulation tests the student’s ability to research information, their ability to present information and their computer literacy.
The case study tests students ability to extend and apply information.
The examination will assess their understanding of the principles of nutrition and growth.

Study abroad students may request a take-away exam paper to be returned via NESS.
