Aims

1. Provide a context to overview forms of online communication from a social perspective;

2. Model theoretical design principles through an industrial context using practical-based scenarios;

3. Allow students to demonstrate abilities in effective collaboration and communication.

This module introduces the practical aspects of group collaboration within the context of a media employment-related example. This is grounded in theoretical and direct empirical evidence of new media technology in action. Although heavily technology-based this course provides opportunity through workshop tuition sessions for those new to web-based publishing to become familiar with this technology.

Weekly combined workshop and lectures sessions provide a familiar setting for group and class discussions and questioning. A subject-related topic is researched within a teamwork structure and the researched material is finally presented online (typically as a website.) This is complemented by students producing a brief design document, a group presentation of their methodology, and a personal report reflecting on the experience.

Theory:
Introducing the notion of being online.
The breadth of online systems currently in social use.
Setting up a theoretical framework to analyse online systems.
What makes good online content?
The building blocks of a static online content.
The social, legal and ethical implications of creating online content.
Collaborative project work and management theory.

Groupwork:
Project allocation and discussions.
Project scale and workload model.
Writing a design plan.
Finalising design plan and presentation rehearsal.
Presenting online ideas to an audience.

Practical work:
Introduction to a web-design application.
Formatting online content.
Creating effective hyperlinks.

‘Lectures’ convey the underlying theory of online communication issues (Aims: 1, Outcomes: 1 & 4) and additionally provide a context for practical industrial concepts (Outcomes: 3 & 4)

‘Practicals’ provide the opportunity to connect the theoretical with the appropriate practical skills (Aims: 3, Outcomes: 3 & 5)

‘Group Learning’ is encouraged as an activity for students to negotiate their project plans within their allocated groups and provides valuable student autonomy (Aims: 2, Outcomes: 2) in the formation of team relationships and the building of self-initiated progressive tasks (Aims: 2, Outcomes: 4 ) essential for successful completion of the assessed project.

Student ‘Private Study’ encourages opportunities for personal reflection (Outcomes: 6) and time to consolidate the knowledge (Outcomes: 1-3) and skills (Outcomes: 4-6) outcomes.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

‘Written project plan and oral group presentation’ is a convenient way to assess the theoretical understanding of the online content (Outcomes: 1 & 3), the difficulties of team project work (Outcomes: 2) and the professional delivery of a team presentation (Outcomes: 4) under time-constraint as required by industry.

The ‘Project Work’ enables the application of subject knowledge and skills (Outcomes: 3 & 4) in providing appropriate content and the practical implementation (Outcomes: 5) to be assessed. The successful completion of the end-product (published online content) provides the means to assess problem solving skills through choices made in identifying and acquiring the skills needed (Outcomes: 2 & 6).

The written ‘Personal Report’ provides a final opportunity for students to critically reflect (Outcomes: 6) and provide evidence that they have met the aims of the module (Aims: 1-3) and have understood the intended knowledge (1-3) and skills (4-6) outcomes.
