This module aims to develop students’ knowledge of planning law, development management and the institutional framework within which they operate and facilitate application of that knowledge through practical evaluation of issues surrounding planning applications.
Original Summary:
Within this module students will gain a introduction to the making of decisions regarding planning applications. The module will cover planning law, development management and the institutional framework within which planners operate. It will consider development management both from the point of view of the applicant and the decision maker. The module will discuss the recent change in focus within planning from development control to development management, and explore whether that change in focus has made any practical difference to planning practice. Practitioners will come in from outside the University to discuss different elements of development management from their perspective. Workshop sessions will apply the skills and knowledge gained through lectures.

The use of lectures will allow students to gain an understanding of the various issues around development management. It is necessary to explain the complex legal/policy framework of development management in a logical way, the best way to achieve this is via lectures. The lectures will feature workshop sessions in order to apply the knowledge gained in 'formal' lectures.

The exam format will test student understanding gathered across the lectures, to ensure sufficient learning of the wide ranging issues required. it will test student understanding of the development management process and the way planning applications are determined.
