To provide information on how genetic factors affect the methabolism of foregin compounds and drug-receptor interactions, an appreciation of current views on the relationship between pharmacogenetic polymorphisms and disease suseptiability, potential approaches to drug design using pharmacogenics and introduction to molecular epidemiology
This module will cover aspects of genetic factors that affect the metabolism of foreign compounds and drug-receptor interactions. Lectures address current views on the relationship between pharmacogenetic polymorphisms and disease susceptibility and potential approaches to drug design using pharmacogenomics and provide an introduction to molecular epidemiology. You will develop a knowledge and understanding of the molecular basis of polymorphisms in drug metabolizing enzymes, including the cytochromes P450, the glutathione S-transferases and N-acetyltransferases, the importance of inter-individual variability in drug metabolism in the drug development process and in therapeutics, polymorphisms in drug receptors and other drug targets and the relationship between genetic polymorphisms and disease susceptibility.
The module comprises of Lectures and seminars and practicals.
Assessment is based on in-course assessment (20%) and written examination (80%).

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
This is an advanced course involving reading of research as well as advanced textbooks. A presentation on a relevant paper is used to assess understanding and advanced reading with the unseen examination ensuring that students have a knowledge of the basic principles
