This module provides an introduction to Literature in English up to c1825. Students are introduced to a range of issues and approaches which will be developed at stages 2 and 3: the varieties of writing in English including poems, plays and novels, and some non-canonical writing from the early periods up to c1825; the cultural and political contexts in which those texts are produced and read, and a range of relevant critical practices. beyond that, students will be invited to explore the relationship between texts and contexts, and how texts might be read in relation to particular generic expectations.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Lectures introduce students to the knowledge outcomes and to a number of staff in the literature section, many of whom are involved in either this module or Introduction to Literary Studies I. Seminars provide an opportunity to practice the skills outcomes outlined above, including oral presentation. Study Groups provide students with the opportunity to discuss topics relevant to the module and respond to the set reading.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
This module supports students in developing written argument, refining their research skills and producing well-evidenced argumentative essays. It does so by setting two essays of equal length and equal weight, one half-way through and one at the conclusion of the module. This strategy recognises the chronological breadth of this module and ensures students are independently examined on medieval and early modern material, followed by a separate work on 18th & 19th century material. Students will also be required to complete a formative assessment as prep for Essay 1 and to conduct a peer review of a draft of their second essay. These exercises will allow students opportunities for feedback before completing their summative assessment.
Further, experience of the 2 long-essay format introduces students to the longer essays they will be required to write at Stage 2.
