Introduce electrical and electronic engineering principles, including theory, problem solving and laboratory work. Practical experience in the measurement of electrical quantities, use of a log-book and report writing.
Outline Of Syllabus
Basic concepts: Coulomb’s law, permittivity, potential difference, energy, power, resistance, inductance, capacitance
DC circuits: Ohm’s law, series and parallel circuits, open and short circuits, conductance, Kirchoff’s laws, circuit analysis, network theorems (Thevenin and Norton), simple network analysis
AC theory: AC properties of capacitors and inductors, series and parallel AC circuits, motor principles, electromagnetic laws of Faraday and Lenz
Electronic devices: principles of semi-conductors, PN junctions and transistors
Digital electronics: number systems and base conversions, binary arithmetic, twos complement subtraction, AND, OR, EX_OR, NAND, NOR, simple logic circuit design and analysis

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
The lectures and notes provide all the knowledge-based requirements of the course. Each lecture topic carries a core set of questions, which define the main areas of assessment. These questions form the basis for the small group teaching (tutorials).
The practical work is a group activity, requiring individual written reports. This provides experience in the use of instruments and maintaining a log-book. The laboratory scripts form part of the lecture material to ensure that students are well prepared for the practical sessions.
Private study time is considered necessary to review material and for writing 4 practical reports.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The exam is designed to assess both the understanding and problem solving ability of the student, primarily in the core areas defined by the Tutorial questions. The assessment of the 4 practical reports provides an evaluation of the students' skills in achieving results as part of a group, recording them in a log-book and distilling this into a formal report.
