As well as the fantastic sporting opportunities available on campus, the city of Newcastle also plays host to a huge variety of sporting arenas guaranteed to grab the attention of any sports lover.  

An enthusiasm for sport radiates throughout the city, generating a vibrant atmosphere that has become a permanent fixture on the terraces of the city’s sporting venues. This unwavering passion for sport is encapsulated every year within the Great North Run, which holds the accolade of the being the world’s biggest half marathon.

Each of the city’s sports teams has a passionate set of supporters eager to welcome newcomers to their club. Become the latest recruit of the ‘Toon Army’ by making the walk across campus to watch Newcastle United play Premier League football at St James’ Park. Or watch Newcastle Eagles continue their fantastic form in the UK basketball league, just a short walk from campus.

Rugby fans can get on the Metro and take a short trip out to Kingston Park, home of the Newcastle Falcons Rugby Union team, or cross the river to visit Gateshead Thunder Rugby League club. Whilst over the river, make sure you pay a visit to Gateshead International Stadium; home to a host of international athletic meets and Gateshead Harriers Athletics Club.

A little further out of the city limits, Kielder Water and Forest Park is the perfect location to try an assortment of heart-rate raising water sports and mountain biking activities. Nearby Tynemouth is home beach to some of the UK’s top pro-surfers and there are plenty of surf schools if you’d like to give it a try.
