Student Music Scene in Newcastle

Newcastle has gained international recognition as a fantastic stage to showcase a huge variety of musical genres.

The variety and versatility of venues in the city allow for fans of all types of music to find live performances through annual festivals or one-off concerts.

Pop and rock

Evolution festivalThe 11,000+ capacity Metro Arena attracts some of the world’s biggest music stars to the city like Rihanna, The Killers and Kasabian.

The iconic O2 Academy is a regular stopover for the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Dizzee Rascal and Newcastle graduates Maximo Park. 

The annual Evolution Festival in May brings top names to the city like Ellie Goulding, The Vaccines and Jake Bugg.


Smaller venues such as The Cluny and The Cumberland Arms champion up-and-coming musicians.

The University’s LIVE in the King’s Hall series hosts performances from international musicians and our own students on campus each week. 

Folk and classical

Folk music studentsJust over the river is The Sage Gateshead, a £70 million futuristic music centre that is home to the Northern Sinfonia and Folkwolks. 

Their annual SummerTyne Americana festival is hugely popular.
