Julia Dental Surgery BDS Honours

Why did you choose Newcastle University?

I came on a visit day to the university and I got a really good feel for it from the students that helped out and hearing about their own experiences. Everyone seemed very friendly and welcoming and I could really imagine myself studying here.

What do you think of your course so far?

It is great! I really enjoyed my first year especially the anatomy part of the course which involved dissections. We also spent some time on clinics shadowing and learnt some basic clinical skills giving us a taste of what is to come later in the course.

Is there anything that has surprised you about either the course or University, which you didn’t know about before you came here?

I was surprised at the variety of subjects we studied last year and how much knowledge I have gained in that one year.

What are the facilities in your School like?

They are excellent. In the clinics we have phantom heads that we use later this year to practise key clinical skills. We also have microscopes that are used regularly to support our studies. The dissection room is great too and can be used in our own self study time.

How would you describe the city?

Newcastle is a lively city. It is a great place to be day or night whatever your interests. It has one of the best nightlifes in the country and there is so much going on any night of the week. It is great for students as living costs are cheap and everything is accessible on foot.

Do you have any tips for living in student accommodation?

It is all down to personal performance. I chose to live in catered halls as I did not want the hassle of cooking for myself in the first year when I knew I would have to in the other years. I thought this would help me with the transition from living at home to university. I chose to live in catered halls as oppose to a flat as I decided I would find it easier to make friends as there are more people on your floor and you are less likely to be stuck with people you don’t particularly get on with. During Fresher’s Week try to meet as many people as you can as everyone is in the same situation.

Where do you live and what is it like?

I currently live in the student area of Jesmond with 5 girls that I met from my accommodation last year, one of which is on my course. It is great and nice to have a social area after not having this last year. Jesmond is a fantastic place to live as there are many students around and everything you need is on your doorstep (shops, post office, bars, gym etc). In first year I lived in Castle Leazes and really enjoyed myself.

How do you spend your spare time?

During my spare time I like to socialise with my friends. I am part of the Dental Society and we have lots of fun events and nights out. It is also a great way to make friends off my course. I like to go jogging and attend music gigs.

What is the best thing about being at Newcastle University?

The people! Students, staff and locals and the friendliest people you could possibly meet and you are bound to make friends for life being here.
