Emily Food and Human Nutrition BA Honours

Course dates: 2010 - 2014

Choosing Newcastle

My home town is Sunderland and I did not want to move to far away, yet wanted to experience university life in halls and out of my home city. After the university open day I had decided this is the university I wanted to attend. The course was exactly what I wanted to study and the lecturers were so helpful. The compulsory year in industry also swayed my decision to chose Newcastle as I feel it will be extremely beneficial after graduation.

Studying at Newcastle

My course is excellent. Although I find it difficult at times, the lecturers are always there to offer assistance when it is needed. The course is relatively small therefore the lecturers know all of us well which is a huge advantage when it comes to exam time!

In the first week of University, our course went to Nottingham on a coach for a sensory testing carrot convention. It was an ideal opportunity to get to know everybody properly and we had so much fun when we arrived. We learnt about various types of panel testing and spent the afternoon comparing carrots! It was a bit of fun yet proved to be very beneficial when it came to the sensory testing section in our module.

As I live relatively close to Newcastle I knew the city very well before I came to University. Nevertheless I did not expect all the staff to be as helpful and friendly as they are. It is an honour to come here.

Facilities at Newcastle

The facilities are excellent. The laboratories are well equipped and most buildings provide numerous computer clusters. Both the Robinson and Walron library are brilliant and the online-book facility is a huge advantage if a book is not available in hard copy in the library.

Living in Newcastle

The city is amazing. Everybody is so friendly and the nightlife is fantastic! There are loads of shopping facilities, including the Metrocentre which is only a 10 minute train journey away! The metro is a quick, cheap and convenient way to travel rather than walking or having to get a taxi. There are so many attractions suited for a wide range of people including a football ground, Centre of Life, Quayside, shopping, the beach and so much more!

In my first year I lived in Victoria Halls. It was an amazing experience and taught me so many basic skills, like how to use an iron!! I met some of my best friends there and would not have chosen anywhere else to live! I am now in my second year and live in West Jesmond with 6 girls I lived in halls with. It is extremely messy but we have so much fun!

Accommodation tip - Bring plenty of warm clothes because in winter it is freezing!

Socialising at Newcastle

When I don't have assignments or exams I spend my spare time going to the cinema, going out for meals. I love a night out, the nightlife is the best ever. There is so many different places to go to it just never gets boring! The drinks are so cheap as well!

Best thing about Newcastle

I love the independence of living away from home yet being close enough to go back home as often as I like. The course is perfect for me and I have met some amazing people.
