Choosing Newcastle
Newcastle was the first university to offer a degree in Speech and Language Sciences and has therefore built up an excellent reputation for the course. The course here at Newcastle looked better than the other speech and language courses in the country and Newcastle is a great city.
Studying
Before I started the course, I knew it would be hard work but I didn’t realise just how busy I would be. However, it is also very rewarding and interesting. We learn about so many different areas relating to speech and language, from anatomy and physiology to child language, linguistics and phonetics.
There is a lot of case based problem solving, where we are given information about a client and have to work through what we do with them in therapy. There are lots of lectures, and opportunities for group work and the type of assignment is varied across different modules, from exams, to written assignments, from group work to oral presentations.
Uni Facilities
I think the Library is an excellent resource with lots of reading material and helpful staff. We also have a resource centre in our course building which is really good when for preparing for placements.
Living
I think Newcastle is a vibrant city with a great atmosphere. There are lots for students to do and it is easily accessible from the local area.
Spare time
In my spare time I enjoy socialising with friends from the course, reading novels, travelling and going shopping in Newcastle!
Your future
Hopefully when I graduate I will be able to get a job as a Speech and Language Therapist in the NHS. I think I would like to work with children who have language and behavioural difficulties or children with dysfluent speech. There is such a wide variety of jobs within this career that it makes me excited and interested in my future as an SLT!
