Bethany Marine Zoology BSc Honours

Why did you choose Newcastle?

I chose Newcastle University because I wanted to see another city and experience something different. I first noticed the University when I saw Newcastle listed as the Guardian's top student city, so I checked out the courses and found a great one.

How have you found the course?

I find it challenging at times, but always interesting and never dull. I didn't expect to meet such a wide range and mix of people here, they are all so diverse.

What do you think of the facilities?

The facilities are great - there is the Dove Laboratory and hopefully soon we will be able to use a boat that's been commissioned.

Have you been on any field trips?

We have had a few trips already, to the beach and to the Dove Laboratory. The trips are great because you get to be outside, experiencing what the marine profession is really like, and it's a great way to help the class bond. We also went to Millport for a week on the West coast of Scotland which was really full on, but we learnt a lot and had a great laugh. It was also a chance to get to know the lecturers better.

What do you think of the city?

The nightlife is amazing, so diverse and friendly, there’s really something for everyone.

Do you have any tips for living in student accommodation?

Make sure you go in prepared - you will meet a huge range of people so just relax and enjoy it. Always be yourself because you will be meeting lifelong friends. Oh, and don't rush into choosing second year accommodation!

What do you do in your spare time?

I go to the gym, and on nice days we get the Metro to Whitley Bay and have barbeques, as well as going to the cinema and shopping. I also have a part-time job.

What's the best thing about Newcastle?

I just love the city and the areas around it, and the friends I have made here are fab.
