Choosing Newcastle
I did a lot of research online when I was applying through UCAS and really liked the look of the course. I then came to visit and loved the city and the location of the University. I also have family quite nearby so it seemed like the best choice. I applied during a gap year so already had my results and confirmed almost as soon as they made me an offer.
Studying at Newcastle
I really enjoy the course. It is more science based than I originally thought but I really like those modules as I did sciences at A-Level and it is where my strengths lie. I have enjoyed the more social modules as well because I think they're also really interesting and I don't know as much about them. I like that we do a variety of subjects and so get a very broad view of all the areas of Psychology.
With regards to surprises, I did not realise that we got to choose all of our modules in the 3rd year. I think this is really good though because by then most people are thinking about what they want to do for careers and so it allows you to just choose the things you are really interested in.
In stage 1 and stage 2, we have to complete research credits in order to be able to use the psychology students as participants for our 3rd year projects. This means that we get to take part in 3rd year projects and also some of the lecturers' work which is really interesting and you get to learn a lot about different research methods and areas.
Facilities at Newcastle
The facilities are really good - we have access to the Robinson Library and the Medical library and numerous computer clusters, some of which are 24 hours. We also have good lecture theatres and some lectures are recorded and put online which is really helpful.
Living in Newcastle
I think Newcastle is a great city. There is always something to do or somewhere to go but it does not feel overwhelmingly big. The shopping and nightlife is really good and part of what attracted me to the city. Getting around is really easy too, most places are within walking distance but you can take the metro or buses to places further afield - for example the beach or more shopping at the metro centre!
In 1st year, I lived in Victoria Hall which I really enjoyed. It was more expensive than most of the other halls but the flats are really nice and modern and I had really good flatmates. I'm in second year at the moment and currently live in Jesmond which is really good, although tends to be more expensive than other areas like Heaton. Most students tend to live in Jesmond and there are a few shops here which is really useful. I'm also going to be living in Jesmond again next year.
Accommodation tips-Really try and make the effort with people when you first move in because everyone will be nervous and in the same boat of not knowing anyone. You can easily make lots of friends and it would be much harder if you don't try in the first few weeks. Maybe take some cookies or something to share with flatmates on your first day to break the ice. Also, earplugs are definitely recommended for the nights when you're not out and everyone else is!
Socialising at Newcastle
I spend my spare time going out with my friends and exploring new parts of the city. I really enjoy baking too so tend to have bake-fests with my friends! There's always something going on or somewhere to go so you never really feel like you have nothing to do.
Best Thing about Newcastle
I really love the atmosphere around the University and in the city. Everyone is so friendly and there's something for everyone. There's lots of places to go out if you want to, but you can also stay in or go to the cinema and just hang out with friends. I have really enjoyed my time here so far and am looking forward to another year.
