Choosing Newcastle
Before I attended the Marine Biology open day, I was adamant I wouldn't be coming to Newcastle. In my head it was too close to home and I wanted a big change. The open day made me completely change my mind. The talks from the marine biology staff and tours of the university made me so eager to start the course and I fell in love with the city itself. There's something about it that made me feel instantly safe and relaxed.
Studying at Newcastle
The course has been amazing so far, a good mixture of lectures, practicals and field trips, covering a large number of modules keeps the course varied. The workload is manageable and the size of the class is small enough for everyone to know everyone and this has allowed us to become quite a close group of friends. Overall I'm having the time of my life at the moment and have nothing to complain about.
I was surprised about how easy it was to meet and make such close groups of friends so quickly. I never expected the course group to be so close with both fellow course mates and the staff as well. I really appreciate the one to one relationships we have with our tutors and the support and communication from the marine biology staff in general.
We had a field trip to Millport in Scotland at the end of first year which was amazing. A lot of hard work but well worth it for the memories and laughs you have with your course mates. It really helped bring the group together. A good bonding experience!
Living in Newcastle
Living in Newcastle is unbelievably fun! It is relaxed and full of the nicest people. I've never felt in danger living here away from home and never had so much fun living here in my life, never want to leave.
I live in Jesmond with six other girls. It is a popular student area so a lot of friends live close by. We're close to Osborne road, a street of bars and restaurants in the centre of Jesmond which are great for meeting up with mates and getting out of the house. Little sandwich delis and Starbucks at your doorstep has been the saviour in the mornings after a night out.
Best thing about Newcastle
The people I've met and the lifestyle you can have by being here.
