Choosing Newcastle
What made me choose Newcastle was that it had such a good reputation and I had heard a lot of great things about the city itself! I came on one of the open days and the place had a great atmosphere and the staff at the talks seemed really welcoming and encouraging!
Studying at Newcastle
The content of my course is really interesting compared to the subjects at A level and thanks to the support there is available, I'm even enjoying the independent work that this "grown up" style of education requires. You do have to work hard around exam periods or assignment deadlines but everyone tends to more than make up for this during the rest of the term!
How easy it is to get in contact with lecturers really surprised me, especially by email. In my experience they always respond really quickly and don’t mind answering any queries.
Living in Newcastle
Newcastle is a really student friendly city. The University campus, most of the student accommodation, the nightlife and all the amenities are located right in the city centre; which makes life cheaper, easier and a lot less daunting when you first move here and are finding your way around! There's always plenty of options for socialising or a night out and Newcastle night-life is known for being lively! There are also plenty of restaurants and the cinema and central station in the city centre if you fancy a change of scene!
I lived in Richardson Road halls in my first year which was the ideal place to meet lots of other students. It was no more than a 15 minute walk to the University buildings and right opposite the University gym so it couldn’t have been a more convenient place to live in first year. I now live in a maisonette with 6 other students in Jesmond which has a good student environment. It's really lovely and has bars, shops and a park. Jesmond is still only a 30 minute walk into the city centre!
Accommodation Tips - Earplugs! And you can never have enough cutlery! It always seems to go missing! Having a shared bathroom might seem off-putting at first but it seems like people who live in halls with a shared bathroom seem to have a much more social experience than those with en-suites and it’s really not half as bad as you might think!
Socialising in Newcastle
Mostly I’ll go shopping in the city centre, out for drinks, on nights out, to the cinema (student tickets + Orange Wednesdays are a bargain!), or just have people round to ours and watch DVDs etc if everyone’s low on funds!
The best thing about Newcastle University
The best thing about Newcastle is probably the choice and quality of nightlife in the city.
