Why did you choose Newcastle University to study your degree?
I chose to study at Newcastle University because it had been recommended to me by people I had worked for.
What was the best part of the degree?
The best part of the degree programme was the farm visits and the coursework that applied to real life situations.
The University has a long history in the field of agriculture - producing students with a very well respected degree. The University farms provide a good opportunity to get out of the lecture theatre and learn in a working farm environment.
What did you enjoy most about life at Newcastle University?
The thing I enjoyed most about being in Newcastle was the social life, the friends I made and the friendly atmosphere created by the local people. As an agricultural student studying at a university, it was nice to mix with a variety of students from other subjects, compared with going to an agricultural college.
Did you meet friends whilst at Newcastle?
The social life at Newcastle University is excellent; Newcastle has a vast and varied social scene which will suit everyone. I made a large group of friends very quickly at university and I am still in regular contact with all of them.
Were you a member of any societies?
I was a member of the Agric Society and the Athletic Society. The Agric society was mainly a social thing; with the athletic team I represented the University at the British University Sports Association Championships.
Do you have any advice for those thinking of starting university?
Work hard in your holidays, that way term time is free to go out and study when necessary.
What job/ further study are you pursuing?
I have been working as a trainee on a dairy unit since leaving Newcastle and have just been promoted to Assistant Manager. My degree made up for my lack of experience but more importantly I was able to demonstrate understanding with confidence at my interview.
I intend to stay in this job as the farm owner is helping me on the pathway to equity gain and maybe one day my own farm.
