I moved from Germany to the UK in 2009 to study Chemistry and I am about the start my third year of the MChem course. At first I was worried I would not understand a lot of the material being taught as I went to a German school. It turned out I had no difficulties at all learning the English chemistry terminology, as there are hardly any differences and the beginning of the course was mostly revision of what I had learnt at school.
My experience at Newcastle university has been brilliant so far. The labs have all been recently refurbished which makes the practical lab sessions even more enjoyable. The staff are very helpful, if you don't understand something in a lecture they are more than glad to help you.
I also came to Newcastle university because of its big social side. There are a huge variety of societies you can join. In first year I joined the Nu:kem committee, which is the chemistry society at Newcastle University. We organise social events such as pub quizzes, Christmas parties and Spring balls. These events are a great opportunity to socialise with students from other stages and members of staff. The nightlife in Newcastle is amazing, there are plenty of clubs and pubs to go to.
I can really recommend Chemistry at Newcastle, you will gain a good degree and will have met plenty of friends along the way.
