Bill Mechanical Engineering BEng Honours

Choosing Newcastle

My reason for choosing to study mechanical engineering at Newcastle University is that the course is structured academically rather than biased towards a hands on approach. As a mature student this academic approach appealed to me because of the prior hands on experience I gained when in industry.

Studying

Initially it came as a shock as to how much course work there is, however overall the engineering course is vastly rewarding. The course encompasses a broad and deep understanding of mechanical engineering subjects such as Thermodynamics, mathematics, statics and dynamics to name a few, which are extremely important when applying engineering concepts to real life situations.

Uni Facilities

I use the Robinson library often, as a source of research and for relevant course books or just to study quietly. There are also a number of good restaurants around the campus, like the Bistro, a favourite for a good hot meal.

Living

Newcastle has a wide variety of events and places of interest to visit. There are numerous shopping malls and restaurants/bars for all tastes. A great friendly place to live or visit.

Spare time

In my spare time I like to travel around the North East and visit places like Kielder forest situated at the borders, a great place for fell walking with lots of facilities for outdoor activities.

Your future

The degree programme offers constant and valuable information for future employment with specific employers and also how to attract prospective employers, given the engineering environment today.

Mature Students

Before studying at Newcastle University full time I attended their Mature Student Orientation programme with current mature students giving advice. The day was structured so that all my questions about university life and the obvious financial burden were answered. Not only is there a wealth of information from the university but when I obtained my university grant from the local governing body they also provided me with good information; if you are in any doubt ask!
