Why did you choose Newcastle University?
Newcastle University was my choice because of the high value of the course among other universities, as well as the city of Newcastle itself. The campus is located in the middle of the city, yet is self contained and has an amazing atmosphere about it.
What do you think of your course so far?
The architecture course has been challenging yet rewarding at the same time. The tutors are helpful and easy to approach, and the small number of students in each year allows you to get a real community feel.
Is there anything that has surprised you about either the course or University, which you didn’t know about before you came here?
I didn’t realise that the school was open 24 hours to architecture students, which is brilliant for allowing you to work during the hours that most suits you. If you struggle to get up before 12, it doesn’t matter, you can work later into the day which many universities do not support.
What are the facilities in your School like?
The facilities at the APL school are fantastic. With the highest spec computers, state of the art model making equipment, and the newly renovated Kofi Bar, the school caters for all your needs.
Tell us about any field trips or project work you have taken part in
With the sites of design projects ranging from Holy Island in first year, a research project in a European city such as Paris or Brussels in second, and other sites across the north east such as Middlesbrough and Gateshead in third year, there are plenty of different places to visit during your studies.
How would you describe the city?
Newcastle is one of the best cities in the country. Being small enough to feel at home in a matter of weeks, yet always changing that is allows you to discover new bars, shops and attractions almost every week, you’ll fall in love with it as quickly as I did.
Do you have any tips for living in student accommodation?
Richardson Road may look like a dive, but it’s by far the most lively, out-going and social halls in the whole uni. Summer BBQs and socials all year round, you’ll soon find the rest of the first years jealous very quickly.
Where do you live and what is it like?
Having lived in Richardson Road first year, Jesmond second year, I am now living in Heaton. There are loads of shops, local people and plenty to do. It’s a little further out than Jesmond but still walking distance. There’s also a massive Morrisons, rather than a very expensive small Tescos, which is always a bonus. How do you spend your spare time?
Architecture gives you very little spare time, but when I do get these brief beautiful moments, I spend it socialising with friends, rock climbing, running, playing football, seeing local attractions and becoming acquainted at the many bars of Newcastle.
What is the best thing about being at Newcastle University?
The best thing about Newcastle Uni, is how the campus is situated bang in the centre of Newcastle, without being lost within a city like many other city Unis.
