Choosing Newcastle
I had several reasons for choosing Sociology at Newcastle. I knew of the university’s excellent academic reputation and I found the city to be quite friendly and lively. After meeting lecturers and students on the politics and sociology degree at a very informative Sociology Open Day, I was happy to make Newcastle my choice.
The department has offered a lot of help and encouragement which has given me a real sense of belonging, as going to University can be daunting experience.
Your course
Because I never studied politics before starting the joint honours degree, I was intrigued as to what the course would offer but the course has lived up to my expectations and enabled me to gain a better understanding of the social and political world. I have a special interest in genocide and political violence and hope to achieve further knowledge of this topic (especially as regards the Rwandan genocide) when tackling my dissertation.
Both the Sociology and Politics departments offer a range of different modules taught by friendly and enthusiastic lecturers, which has given me the boost that I have needed throughout my years at Newcastle. The option to study abroad has also become very popular amongst students and offers a great opportunity to meet new people and be a part of new experiences.
Social Life at Newcastle
One main attraction of Newcastle is the wide range of sports and clubs that are on offer for everyone. The clubs and societies range from the ultimate Frisbee club society to ice hockey and fencing club. The university has a competitive and well known athletic/sports department, where students can be sociable, meet new friends and participate in out of school activities.
Living in Newcastle
I have fallen in love with the city of Newcastle. Newcastle is small enough to give you a sense of belonging but still offers all the perks of a much bigger city-this is great for those who are leaving home for the first time. The nightlife is great, as I am sure most people are aware of the reputation and it actually exceed these expectations. The city is very affordable and the people are very friendly.
