Choosing Newcastle
The reason why I chose Newcastle is because I was impressed by its very good reputation. Newcastle University is clearly a world leading institution providing a high level of teaching and research opportunities.
My Course
My course is a sandwich course as between the second and third year of my studies I did a twelve month industrial placement. I chose to work for the ISS department in the University in order to get some relevant work experience to enable me to get a competitive graduate job in the future.
Student Support
At Newcastle University students are very well supported by university staff, academics and graduates. Each student is assigned to a personal tutor who helps you throughout the course with anything. Similarly, there are mentoring sessions that are running every year for students needing extra help from older and more experienced students.
Computing Facilities
The University has perfect IT support. The majority of my lectures are recorded and I can watch them whenever I wish from the re-cap system. Similarly, all lecture and seminar materials are published on the University's Blackboard system, to which all students have access.
The Library
The Robinson Library is an award winning library and is a great place to study. It has private rooms as well as large rooms for team projects with big flat screen monitors.
Students' Union
As a Turkish student that has travelled around the world my entire life, I wanted to bring my multicultural background to the student union and therefore founded the Mediterranean Countries Society of which I have been the President for the last three years. Together with my team we promote the Mediterranean culture to Newcastle University students and staff. There also more than one hundred student societies you can join.
Living in Newcastle
Newcastle as city is also great. It is known as a safe student city with a dynamic night life. Some award winnings bars and clubs welcome students. As a shopaholic, I would say this city is great for shopping. There is a huge shopping centre (Metrocentre) out of town and the shops in the city centre bring all brands together and makes Newcastle a fashionable city.
Future Plans
After I finish my studies I will be seeking a job that will enable me to put the theories I learnt from my tutors and the experiences I had in this field in practice. My aim is to be a member of an executive board in a world leading company. I would strongly recommend and encourage all Turkish students to apply to the University and be a step closer to this unique experience.
