Course Dates: 2011-14
Your course
I find the course challenging. It is a subject I am interested in and also intrigued by, so even though I have only been here for a short time, I can say that it is going well so far. The level of teaching on the course is excellent and I believe the content is on par with what I might expect at a Law School in Canada.
Choosing Newcastle
I chose to study in the UK because UK law is also relevant in Canadian jurisdiction. In the small amount of law I had previously studied, the teachers used to often reference UK cases. I find that the UK system is more accommodating to students who have worked previously and want to study again. It is easier to do that here than in Canada. Newcastle was appealing as I wanted to study in a small place with less distractions so I could focus on my studies. I thought it would be interesting to live in another place other than London, plus I wanted a change of scenery. The fact that I get a partial Law School Scholarship every year was also a deciding factor. The cost of living here is also really good and I am in a good position to see other parts of Europe.
Facilities
The 24 hour library service is really good. I like studying there as it is a good change of scenery from my room. The staff in the Law Library are very helpful and accommodating. The shuttle bus service which takes home students who like to study late is very useful. I prefer to study late so use this service a lot.
Students' Union
The Christian Union were very welcoming to all international students when I first arrived here. They helped me settle in and I got connected with my local church through them. I am also a member of the Law Society who are a fun group of people.
International Welcome
I used the Airport Meet and Greet Service which was very welcoming and helpful to students. I also attended several of the information sessions held during the week which helped me get to know what life would be like on campus.
Accommodation
I live in Leazes Terrace and have my own room with ensuite which I like. Everything I need I have there and I would like to stay there for my whole degree if possible. It's convenient and a good distance from the University.
The city
The city is small enough so there are not too many distractions from my studies. I enjoyed the Christmas markets during the festive season. In my spare time here, I go running in Leazes Park and go for a coffee in some of the cafés to take a break from studying and my room.
Advice for international students
I would advise students that no matter what they are studying, they should respect their fellow students as you can learn as much from them as they can from you.
