Course Dates: 2010-14
Choosing Newcastle
I chose to study at Newcastle University because I think that it was the best option for me. I not only have the chance to study International Business Management but also Chinese. The course also gives you the chance to spend one year in China which can significantly enhance my position in the job market in the future. Newcastle University is one of the top institutions in the UK. I think that any future employer will take that into consideration.
Course So Far
I consider my course as quite interesting. Business is not hard, but I have to put a lot of effort in to studying Chinese. Luckily, there are many Chinese people in Newcastle who can help me practise characters and pronunciation. I think that British lecturers use slightly different methods than in Poland, thus studying is not so tedious. I like that the focus is on practical knowledge.
Surprises
There is nothing much that has surprised me here. Maybe I did not expect that I would meet so many international people at the University. I expected that there would be more British. However, I think that has had a positive influence on my adaptation to my new environment.
Facilities
It is really good that everyone can have an access to the IT facilities on campus. The library is huge and there is enough space to have a group meetings or to study. There is also a gym, Students' Union with a shop and many different facilities.
Field Trips
I took part in a project in which I had to create a British-Chinese Business with my group. It was very interesting because the best project had the chance to exist in real life. I enjoyed working with my group on this project.
Year Abroad
I have not taken a year abroad yet, but I am going to study in China next year. I think it is really exciting and it is going to be a huge experience which will enhance my CV. I will also have a chance to improve my Chinese, meet new people, and discover a different culture.
City
I think that Newcastle is lovely. There are lots of students here so the night life is amazing. There is no way to be bored. There are a lot of shops, night clubs and restaurants but also places in which you can isolate yourself from other people, like the coast or the Quayside. I think that everyone can find something for themselves in Newcastle.
Accommodation
I used to live in University accommodation, which was really good because I met a lot of people. Now I live in a private house with my friends. It is really convenient because we live close to University and to other friends.
Accommodation Tips
I think that it is definitely beneficial to live in university halls for the first year, especially if you come to Newcastle without knowing anyone. Students meet friends for life there. I know people who used to live in private accommodation for the first year and they regretted it. Living in halls is not so expensive compared to private accommodation - sometimes it can be even cheaper, it depends on the hall. The social life is definitely better in halls.
Spare time
I usually meet with my friends in my spare time. We usually go out or spend time in the town. I also work part-time at the weekends. There is a lot of things to do in Newcastle so I am never bored.
Best Thing
The best thing about Newcastle is that it is one of the top institutions in UK. Also, the fact that there are many students from different parts of the UK and from different parts of the world make my life interesting and exciting.
