Why did you choose Newcastle University?
When I was looking at applying for university, I went to a couple of other visit days before visiting Newcastle. As soon as I got to Newcastle I made up my mind that this is where I wanted to be. Everything about it was just right; the people are so friendly here and there is always something to do. Newcastle University Business School students also have a brilliant record for graduate employment.
What do you think of your course so far?
I have enjoyed the course so far as I can see how it is preparing me for the world of work. The course covers many areas of business and offers the opportunity to develop essential skills that employers look for including teamwork and planning and organising.
Is there anything that has surprised you about either the course or University, which you didn’t know about before you came here?
It was good to see how committed students are to their sports teams, managing to fit in hours of training a week whilst maintaining a high standard of learning. There is something for everyone when it comes to university sport; whether you want to play competitively or just to keep fit.
What are the facilities in your School like?
The Business School is currently based right in the centre of the main campus which makes it only a short walk from wherever you may be on campus. The Business School will soon have its own brand new building next to St. James’ Park which will offer better facilities for students.
Tell us about any field trips or project work you have taken part in
In my final year I am taking part in a Management Consultancy Project where I will work with a real business as a Management Consultant. I am looking forward to this as I enjoy any hands-on experience that I can gain from my degree.
How would you describe the city?
Newcastle is the perfect city for any student, there really is something for everyone. The people here are really friendly and, as well as a second-to-none nightlife, I always feel safe wherever I am.
Do you have any tips for living in student accommodation?
Living in student accommodation is all part of the university experience. The first thing to do is make it feel like home, bring your favourite home comforts and stick up your pictures. It is likely that you will be living with a group of people that are completely different in all kinds of ways; it is great to get to know different people and share their interests.
Where do you live and what is it like?
I currently live in Heaton, which is slightly further away from the University than the main student area of Jesmond. However, it is still only about a 15 minute bus ride to the University. The area is still popular with students because it is cheaper to live here than it is in Jesmond. I live with 3 friends from university all studying different courses. I love the independence I have gained since moving away from home.
How do you spend your spare time?
In my spare time it is very tempting to go shopping with hundreds of shops on the University’s doorstep! I also like to go to the pub and chill out after a day of lectures. The University has brilliant sports facilities that I love to make use of. You are also spoilt for choice when it comes to sports teams and societies!
What is the best thing about being at Newcastle University?
The best thing about being at Newcastle University is knowing that everything I do here is preparing me for the world of work; there are so many opportunities to gain new skills in different areas.
