Edward Agri-Business Management BSc Honours

Why did you choose Newcastle University?

I felt that Newcastle University offered a diverse choice of degree programmes as well as having a reputation for excellence.

What were the best aspects of your degree programme?

The best thing about my degree programme was being able to choose from a wide variety of modules that were available, not just to agriculture students, which allowed me to choose subjects which interested me personally whilst still maintaining a core focus.

What did you enjoy most about life at Newcastle University?

Being in the heart of a vibrant city made living in Newcastle an unforgettable experience! Life at the university mirrored that of the city, it was always busy with different departments and schools looking into new projects and trying to progress.

Did you make good friends at the University?

Some of the best friends I now have are from my University days. I made an effort not only to get to know the people on my course well but also those in clubs and first year halls of residence.

Were you a member of a club or society?

I was a member of the University boat club for the first year of university, where I met two of my closest friends. I then became a member of the Officer Training Corps (OTC). Although I didn't want to enter the army, the OTC was still excellent fun and I have learnt important lessons and abilities from taking part in it. In April of second year a small group of us ran the length of Hadrian’s Wall (some 84 miles) in three days.

Do you have any advice for new students about financing university?

To be prepared for the simple truth that living costs money! It is incredibly important to balance going out and having a good time and knowing what you can afford. Personally, I managed to build up funds over my year out before university and then throughout holidays, mainly the long summer ones.

I then supplemented this with a part-time job during the second and third years. In the end I still came out with a student loan, albeit a small one.

What job/course are you currently doing or pursuing?

I am currently looking at several opportunities investing in new businesses in the UK outside of agriculture, despite being from an agricultural background. I feel that the opportunity to do so might create the chance for me to prove myself quicker than working for a large company, as well as supporting my family.

The business skills gained in my degree, such as being able to read accounts and understand simple English Law, have made me more aware of what is involved in running any business, not just one focussed on agriculture.

What would you say to someone thinking of choosing Newcastle?

Newcastle offers world-class teaching and research opportunities combined with living in a large, vibrant city, the chance to participate in a range of activities connected to the University, and the chance to make friends for life.

What is your favourite memory of your whole student experience?

Learning more about myself as a young adult, both professionally and socially.
