Choosing Newcastle
I chose Newcastle University because it has everything that I was looking for; a reputable course, a high profile within the national and global academic field and most importantly, a stimulating, supportive and fun environment to work in. The city itself has an extremely warm and welcoming atmosphere, and I don't for one minute regret my decision to come here and study.
Studying at Newcastle
I feel that I have made huge developments, personally and academically, being a modern languages student here at Newcastle University. There is a fantastic support network amongst lecturers and students alike within the Modern Languages School; staff are easy to contact, and we are encouraged to discuss and work in groups with our classmates, promoting the exchange of different languages and ideas, too.
As for surprises, there have been many things! Before I came, I didn't know how good the service LRC (Language Resource Centre) was; as a languages undergraduate it is invaluable to have a library specialised in this area. Moreover, I did not expect how difficult studying Mandarin would be! However, I see this in a positive light; we had to work very hard in first year to get the language up to A-level standard, but throughout it all, it was thoroughly enjoyable and fascinating to begin to understand the basics to this beautiful language. Another thing I was not aware of was that we could chose to study other languages with our European ones; hence, I took a module in Catalan during second year, which was fantastic!
The facilities are excellent; the LRC offers a wide range of resources in order for you to develop and practice your language, in an academic but also casual way. For example, the televisions are connected to multiple channels from across the world, which is brilliant in improving your listening skills, but is also great if you simply want to relax and watch some foreign telly! There is a fantastic stock of foreign films and documentaries too, which are a fantastic aid within your degree.
I have taken part in Newcastle University's SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) Society - SIFE is a University-based organisation which is focused on creating projects, both international and local, transferring business knowledge and skills to individuals, businesses or other organisations. It is a method in which independence is created, hence it has both a realistic and charitable nature, too.
A year away from Newcastle
I spent my third year living and studying in Beijing, China. I studying for a whole academic year in Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU), which has a long, highly reputable history of teaching Mandarin to foreign students. The experience was unforgettable, crazy, and close to my heart - a true eye-opener to the difference in cultures that exist in our world. What is more, during the Chinese New Year period, we had a lot of time available to travel around China - perhaps one of the best experiences of my life was travelling to different places around this intriguing, unfamiliar land.
Living in Newcastle
I live in the area of Sandyford, neighbouring Jesmond. It is so convenient for walking into Uni (it only takes about 15 minutes from my house), and is still close to Jesmond, too. Plus, in general, it's also a lot cheaper to live in than Jesmond!
Accommodation Tip - I would use all the resources that are available to you; go to the accommodation office at the Union if you need any advice or even want to find accommodation, as it is very secure doing this through the University. Before signing anything, read the contract cover to cover, and if you are not happy with its content, then asked for it to be changed. Never hand over a deposit without asking for a receipt!
Socialising in Newcastle
In my spare time (when I have some as a final year student!), I like to go to the gym or take part in classes (Yoga, Zumba etc). I'm running the Anglo-Chinese Society this year, which, although is a lot of work, is great fun too, and pays off with the fantastic socials we have! I also love to watch live music, read, go to the cinema etc.
Best thing about Newcastle
The people; we are in an environment here full of enthusiastic, talented and extremely clever people. It inspires you and also encourages you to broaden your mind and to try new things.
