Choosing Newcastle
Newcastle University was my first choice because I knew so many people who had absolutely loved being here. When I came to look around on my open day it just felt right, there was such a great atmosphere and everyone was so welcoming and friendly. It is a great location for me too, because it is so easy to get to on the train.
Studying at Newcastle
I love my course; an ambidextrous brain is definitely required because you are always studying so many different aspects of Music. It is really diverse - one minute you might be analysing Beethoven and the next you are asked to have a go at Caribbean drumming.
Before I came to Newcastle I hadn’t realised how much support tutors give you and how great the careers service is. The staff are so dedicated and helpful that you never feel like you are on your own and unsupported, they’re right behind you.
The facilities in the music school are fantastic. The music studios are still very new and the technology and practise rooms in them are great. We also have a wonderful common room which makes you feel rooted in the department and it’s a great place to catch up with coursemates and work.
I have just taken part in a collective performance module which was brilliant; working with other musicians who are from all different musical backgrounds and are so creative and talented makes me feel very proud of my course and the university.
Living in Newcastle
Newcastle is really vibrant and there is always something going on whether it is an art exhibition, a concert or even just a great night out (Newcastle has the number one nightlife in the country). It's big enough to still find new, exciting things to do but compact enough not to be overwhelming.
I have lived in Jesmond for the past two years which has been really fun. The area is almost completely student based and all my friends live within a 10 minute walk. It feels really safe too, it's great!
Accommodation tip - firstly, when you start university, really make sure your halls will be a great place for you to settle in. You meet a lot of your friends in halls so it is quite important to get the right ones which suit you. When you move out of halls, don't rush into choosing a house too quickly but sign for one before Christmas and make sure you have a good landlord – this is really important.
Socialising at Newcastle
If I’m not working I will be with friends. There is always something to do in Newcastle. I have been to lots of concerts at The Sage which is a fabulous venue, I play in the Newcastle University Symphony Orchestra and going out with my friends is always really good fun! The social side of Newcastle is second to none.
Best thing about Newcastle
The best thing about being at Newcastle University is the people you meet there. I have met so many fun, life-long friends and could not recommend a better university. Newcastle strikes the perfect balance of work and play.
