Victoria Combined Honours BA Honours

Choosing Newcastle

I chose Newcastle because it’s a small yet lively city. There are plenty of things to do and lots of places to go without feeling overwhelmed. Wherever you go, you will bump into someone you know. Newcastle University is one of the best universities in the country. I knew that by coming to Newcastle I’d be gaining excellent job prospects whilst also having a good time.

Best thing about your course

I like how Combined Honours really tries to pull the course together as we all do different subjects so it’s harder to feel a sense of community within the course. However, Combined Honours have their own society which offers socials and opportunities like Peer Assisted Study Support  (PASS) and the mentoring scheme, which is also the best mentoring scheme at the University. I chose Combined because I didn’t want to focus on just one subject for three years and Combined Honours has given me the variety and diversity I was looking for.

Recommending Newcastle

Combined Honours is ran by an extremely hard working team (I know because I worked with them for 3 months) who do their absolute best to make sure each student gets the most out of their course. From creating opportunities like Peer Assisted Study Support (PASS) who help Combined students with essays, and providing mentors to support and guide first year students and offering all Combined students the chance to take Combined Honours modules in their chosen area of study. I believe there are many attributes to gain from studying Combined Honours.

Describing Newcastle

Not a huge city but very lively. Lots of places to eat and shop, the quayside offers nicer restaurants and bars and the clubs and bars are never too far away from each other. Newcastle is the cheapest and best night out in the country, every night of the week caters for students.

Clubs and societies at Newcastle

Intramural sport is brilliant. It’s much more relaxed than university sport, yet still competitive. I’ve met so many people through playing netball and have recently joined hockey. We often go on socials, have pizza nights and are going ice skating soon. The netball team regularly play matches on Saturdays and afterwards we get a free lunch at the Hancock who sponsors us. We often get together with the rugby, football and hockey teams to go out and socialise.

Living in Newcastle

I live in Jesmond. It was very easy to find a place for six girls as there are many letting agencies in Jesmond and most of them have reasonable fees. You can find a house at any point of the year but we searched early because we had specific idea of what we wanted from a house.
