The learning experience at Newcastle is significantly different from that at school or college. At university you will play an active part in the learning process, with increasing encouragement from us to debate, discuss and research what you’re learning. In this way, you will come to fully appreciate the nature of knowledge and how it is created.
We place greater emphasis on independent study as your confidence grows and your study skills develop. We aim to produce critically thinking graduates who can independently apply their knowledge and skills in learning, life and work across the world.
We are a Russell Group University so you will be taught by academic staff whose research informs their teaching. This translates into enthusiastic teaching from people who are passionate about taking their knowledge to new levels and sharing it with you. You will have first-hand access to the people who are making the breakthroughs, writing the books and testing the theories that you will be learning about.
As well as subject-specific knowledge that can prepare you for a vocational or specialist career, you will also have the chance to develop skills and experiences that will last a lifetime. So even if your subsequent career takes you down a completely different path, you will be well prepared.

Our management of academic standards and quality of learning opportunities across the University received a ‘judgement of confidence’ from the auditor of higher education, the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), the best rating available. The next QAA review will take place in 2015.
Newcastle has achieved five QS Stars from QS Quacquarelli Symonds, the first international assessment of its kind. Find out more about this quality ranking.
