Newcastle University's Global Learning Community

At Newcastle you will join a global community of over 20,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students from over 120 different countries. Our aim is that all Newcastle students graduate as global citizens with the skills, knowledge and aptitude they need to thrive in the international job market.

In support of this, we encourage you to add an international dimension to your Newcastle experience by making the most of our global connections. This includes the opportunities below.

+ Study abroad

Study abroad is available as a fully recognised part of your studies for the majority of our degrees. There are two types of study abroad programmes available:

  • in Europe through the Erasmus exchange programme
  • outside Europe through the University’s study exchange partnerships with some of the world’s most prestigious institutions

Our study abroad partners include some of the world’s most highly ranked institutions including:

  • The University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign
  • Monash University, Australia
  • University of Sydney, Australia
  • McGill University, Canada
  • University of Groningen, Netherlands
  • National University of Singapore
  • Hong Kong University
  • Seoul National University, South Korea
  • Kyoto University, Japan

+ Work abroad

It may be possible for you to undertake an international work placement as an accredited part of your degree. Your tutors and our award-winning Careers Service can provide support to help you find a suitable placement that matches your interests and career aspirations.

+ Volunteer abroad

Madventurer, based in Newcastle University Students’ Union, runs a number of overseas volunteer projects in countries such as Ghana, Kenya, Peru, Thailand, Fiji, South Africa and India.

+ Learn a language

You may be able to build language modules into your degree for academic credit. Many of our degrees allow you to select optional modules in modern langueages.

If not, why not start learning a language in your spare time in our award-winning Language Resource Centre.

The Centre is also home to our tandem learning scheme which partners you with a native speaker in your target language for language learning on an informal exchange basis.

+ Organise an overseas expedition

We’re recognised by the Royal Geographical Society as one of the leading UK universities for student expeditions. We’re particularly keen to encourage expeditions organised by students to carry out research outside the UK. The University Expeditions Committee can offer advice and, in some cases, financial assistance to support expeditions judged to be both worthwhile and safe.
