  • Fenham - a reasonable area to live with frequent buses to the city centre
  • City Centre - more expensive, but plenty to choose from in the Manors and Quayside areas
  • Tynemouth, Cullercoats and Whitley Bay - variety of housing at the coast (20-30 mins Metro journey away)
  • Tyne Valley - picturesque villages provide an alternative to city life, with railway for easy commuting
  • Northumberland and County Durham - rural tranquillity to the north and south and easy commuting

Located adjacent to the Newcastle University campus is the Childsplay Nursery. This is an independent nursery, popular with staff, run by a parents' co-operative.

The University offers childcare vouchers. Staff buy these via a 'salary sacrifice' arrangement.

Commuting

While Newcastle is the hub of activity in the North East, it is less congested than most large cities.

With most of the city lying within one square mile, it's easy to get around.

Many residential areas are within easy walking distance of the University, or on Metro or bus routes.

Tyne and Wear Metro provides an excellent transport link to the University, with stops in the city centre and further afield.

The local authority has a policy of reducing the number of car journeys into the city.

The University is also committed to helping staff leave their cars outside the city. It encourages alternatives such as public transport, walking, cycling and car sharing.

The University has negotiated discounted season tickets on public transport.

The Metro makes commuting quick and efficient. Haymarket Metro Station is just over the road from the University campus.

Two of the main bus stations are also within five minutes of the main University campus.

Cycle to work scheme

Employees lease from the University a bike and safety equipment of their choice. Cycle lockers and changing facilities are also provided.

There is limited car parking on campus. It's priced in line with local, public parking provision.
