The ResLife Find a Flatmate Scheme is for single students who are looking to share private accommodation, and who wish to join with others to form a group. This service is available to all current first-year registered students of Newcastle University. Any second-year and above students should contact the Student Advice Centre in NUSU.

Our events to meet potential flatmates will start again after the Spring Break
ResLife Find a Flatmate events are held regularly in term 2 online via zoom/ in various venues across the campus (COVID restrictions permitting). First-year students can also ask for further information and peer-to-peer advice from the ResLife Student Assistants in their accommodation at their drop-ins.
Once you have registered via our online form we will email to inform you of any forthcoming events and once you have confirmed whether you are attending we will inform you of the location of the event/zoom details. Places at the events are limited so we ask you not to disclose the information to anyone who is not registered with us.
During term time we hold ResLife Find a Flatmate meetings to help students who are looking for accommodation in the private sector but currently do not have a group to search with. Numbers can vary but normally between 8 - 12 students attend each session if we are present in person, though numbers can be larger than this if we are holding the event over a zoom call.
When you arrive at the present in person event you will be asked to sign the attendance list and fill in a name label so others know what to call you. If the event is via zoom we would ask that you keep your camera on at all times and that your name is displayed. Once the initial introductions are complete, you will have an opportunity to chat with prospective flatmates. If the group is large you will be divided into smaller groups to make it easier for you to chat and get to know each other. After 15 minutes or so some attendees will be asked to move tables in order that everyone in the group will have an opportunity to speak to others at the event who are maybe sitting elsewhere in the room. If the event is being held via ZOOM we will use breakout rooms to rotate the group so everyone gets to speak to each other.
The event is informal and there will be time for you to speak to other students to find out what others are looking for to see if this matches your own needs and expectations. This part of the event is student-driven – so it may be an idea beforehand to think of what you might need to ask potential flatmates and be happy to talk about your housing/flatmate priorities, and maybe even your hobbies and interests. If you are unsure of what questions to ask others we can give you a prompt sheet to guide you.
At the end of the event, you may wish to exchange contact details with the potential flatmates. Following the event, you are free to decide how you will look for accommodation in the private sector.
If you are interested in attending one of the upcoming events please fill in the form below and we will inform you the dates and times by email.
