The accommodation offers great value for money and provides something for everyone with the flexibility to choose a catered or self-catered option.
EAT@Castle Leazes offers good quality food and hassle-free meals with no need to cook after a busy day, take a look at the varied menus. In addition, Bar CLH serves good value hot and cold snacks and drinks. Vending machines provide sweets, snacks and drinks 24/7.
Access and safety
Accommodation is arranged in a number of blocks ranging from four to nine floors around courtyards and lifts are available in four of the blocks.
We take the safety of our students very seriously and Estates Security Officers patrol our accommodation to ensure your peace of mind.
A Residences Manager is responsible for Residential Services as well as welfare and discipline and a Customer Services Manager is responsible for Reception Services.

Breakfast and evening meals are served Monday to Friday in EAT@Castle Leazes. Meals are served during a two to three hour period to make sure you can work around your timetable.
Our varied menu offers plenty of choice including vegetarian options. However, we're unable to cater for Kosher, vegan or Halal diets.
There are three room types available:
Your bedroom is on a floor varying in size from 10 to 17 rooms. Each floor is occupied by all male or all female students but the block accommodates both genders. A small kitchen is provided with a cooker, fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster. You will need to bring crockery, cutlery and pans to cook your own meals at weekends. There are no social or dining facilities in this type of accommodation. Showers and toilets are located on each floor.
Your en-suite bedroom is located in a stylish flat of seven to 11 rooms. Each flat has a contemporary kitchen, dining area and lounge with a flat-screen TV (licence included). Kitchens include a cooker, fridge and freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster. You will need to bring crockery, cutlery and pans.
Your bedroom will be located on a corridor or in a two-bedroom flat. Rooms located on a corridor share the communal showers, toilet and small kitchen on the floor. Two bedroom flats are located on floors of 17 students and have two single bedrooms and a small kitchen and bathroom within the flat. Kitchens include a cooker, fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster. You will need to bring crockery, cutlery and pans to cook your own meals at weekends. There are no social or dining facilities in this type of accommodation.

In our self-catered accommodation you'll be able to cook for yourself. Choose this option if you want a bit more freedom and flexibility around when and what you eat.
There are two types of rooms available:

Castle Leazes is a lively student village, just a short walk from the campus and handy for the University Sports Centre.
The buzz of the campus, city centre and shops are a 20 minute walk away.

From Newcastle Coach Station the following services operate to Barrack Road Industrial Estate: 71, 72, 87, 88.
Cross over the road, walk through industrial estate along Holland Drive to Castle Leazes main entrance (two minutes’ walk).
A taxi from the Coach Station to Castle Leazes takes approximately seven minutes.
For bus times and fares refer to Nexus Travel Line or contact them by telephone on 0871 200 2233.
Calls to this number will cost 10 pence a minute from a landline and considerably more from a mobile.
From Newcastle Central Station, take bus (numbers 71, 72, 87, 88) from Grainger Street, to Fenham Barracks.
Cross road and walk down Holland Drive to Main Entrance – two minutes’ walk.
Alternatively, take the Metro from Central Station to Haymarket, then walk up St Thomas’ Street, up Richardson Road and across the Moor to Castle Leazes – 15 minutes’ walk.
Alternatively, a taxi from the Central Station to Castle Leazes takes approximately seven minutes.
Newcastle International Airport is about seven miles northwest of Newcastle University.
A taxi from the Airport will take about 15 minutes, costing approximately £15.
You can also travel by Metro (rapid transport system) to either the Haymarket (25 minutes) or the Central Station (30 minutes) and follow directions as above.

Castle Leazes is University-Managed accommodation.
The contract is a fixed term period of 38 weeks (23 September 2018 to 16 June 2019) and covers the duration of the academic year. Rents are charged per day, so if your contract differs to the standard dates above (i.e. earlier arrival), you will incur additional accommodation charges at the relevant daily rate.
All utility bills are included, WiFi is free and we also provide Personal Possessions Insurance.

Our accommodation is accessible to all and we support students who have particular needs or disabilities
We have one fully accessible ground floor, en-suite study-bedroom. It is fitted with mechanical lifting and ceiling track hoist, automatic low level door opening ‘push pads’ and light switches. The wetroom is fitted with a height adjustable washbasin, clos-o-mat toilet, grab rails and washroom alarm. There is a single bedroom next door which can be used as a carer’s self-catered room.
In addition, there are seven ground floor study-bedrooms with fire alarm strobe warning light system, amber doorbell strobe beacon, a pull cord alarm, and an induction loop system.
We also have two catered washbasin study-bedrooms at third floor level, fitted with amber doorbell, strobe beacon, ceiling pull cord alarm, fire alarm strobe warning light and induction loop system.
We have seven flats, each with one fully DDA compliant en-suite study-bedroom. The study-bedroom is fitted with a height adjustable desk, a wardrobe with pull down hanging rail, fire alarm strobe warning light system and a pull cord alarm.
The en-suites are equipped with:
- a height adjustable shower
- folding shower seat and back support
- pull cord alarm
- height adjustable washbasin
- hinged support and grab rails
The communal kitchens are equipped with lowered worktops, a sink and hob with front-facing controls, a low-level cupboard unit, fire alarm strobe warning light system and a pull cord alarm.
The flats are located in the Castle Court area, with a disabled toilet with fire alarm strobe warning light system and pull cord alarm in the ground floor area. Disabled refuge points are available on each staircase landing area with intercom, and there is an emergency lift.
Castle Leazes accessible facilities
The central amenity area is equipped with two fully accessible toilets. There is lift access to Havelock Hall dining room and the bar area and evac chairs are available for students with mobility issues to use when necessary.
All pull cord alarms are connected directly to reception and are monitored by Estate Security Service outside of normal opening hours.
