ONE Planet

Now's our once-in-a-lifetime chance to make climate action a priority.

Creating a sustainable future together

It’s no secret that we’re facing a worldwide climate emergency. On top of this, the events of 2020 have intensified many of the challenges facing humanity.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a devastating effect on economies and health. However, rapid changes to our lifestyles have also brought some positive environmental impacts.

We’ve seen less travel, freedom to speed up green innovation and reductions in greenhouse gasses.

How the University is tackling climate change

Our vision for one planet at newcastle is to create a world-leading, interdisciplinary research environment. one in which international experts work in cutting-edge facilities. by putting scientific findings into action, we hope to develop and implement effective solutions to global challenges.

Our impact

In 2019, the United Nations warned that we could have just 11 years left to limit a climate change catastrophe.

Since then, Newcastle University has worked tirelessly – across all four campuses – to tackle this issue. Our efforts include research, teaching and strategies for sustainability. In 2019, the University joined other UK institutions in declaring a climate emergency.

The Times has recognised our pro-active approach in its higher education ranking. Newcastle was ‘best university in the UK for climate action’ in 2019 and ranks in 7th place globally. The University is 23rd in the world for our commitment to sustainable development. We’re also the top UK University for sustainable cities and communities.

The University has committed to further de-carbonisation of its activities with the aim of achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2040.

With your help, our ONE Planet Alumni Day of Action will spread this effect among our global alumni community.

A Newcastle alumna and former staff member kickstarted the ONE Planet fund with an incredibly generous gift of £100,000. The fund supports the University’s mission to tackle climate change and design sustainable transdisciplinary solutions. These include:

  • The new ONE Planet Doctoral Training Programme, led by Newcastle.
  • ONE Planet PhD Scholarships which will support future global change scientists.
  • ONE Planet MSc Scholarships to enable the next generation of graduates to take their climate change learning forward into practice.
  • The recently launched ONE Planet Hub. Its research and teaching provide a scientific basis for the decisions society needs to ensure a sustainable future.
  • The development of the ONE Planet Centre of Research Excellence (NuCORE) for Climate and Environmental Resilience, which is now underway. The NuCORE will draw together a community of researchers from across the University.
