Newcastle University Retired Staff Society (NU RSS)

The NU RSS was launched in 2018 and provides opportunities for all of the University’s retired staff.

Our aims are to:

  • Organise and promote social and educational activities
  • Provide regular information about the University
  • Grow the relationship between retired staff and Newcastle University

Membership is open to all categories of staff retiring from the University and in receipt of a University pension (or through a related scheme). We wish to encourage the widest participation. There is no membership fee.

The RSS is a ’work in progress’ – starting with regular talks and opportunity for members to socialize over coffee or tea. Recent and forthcoming lectures include:

  • ‘Should Arts Students learn to draw and paint?’ – Professor Richard Talbot
  • ‘Uncovering Colossus: World War 2, Bletchley Park, and the world’s first electronic computer’ – Professor Brian Randell
  • ‘Putin’s Russia’ – Professor David Saunders
  • ‘Wild in the City: Gosforth Nature Reserve’ – Clare Freeman, Director of the Natural History Society of Northumbria
  • ‘An Age of Wonder: surprising results from the Newcastle 85+ Study’ – Professor Tom Kirkwood
  • For details of future lectures find the information here: NU RSS Programme 19-20 Please note events are currently postponed due to Public Health England guidance surrounding group meetings and COVID-19

Newcastle University is a leader in research on ageing and the health. We want the RSS to reflect this and promote evidence-based ways to wellbeing: staying connected; being active; continuing to learn; being mindful; and ‘giving back’. Our next phase of development will:

  • Enable RSS members to organize small groups for social and educational activities.
  • Promote volunteering that harnesses the interests, mental capital and experience of members and supports the University to mutual benefit.

A Steering Group of retired staff comprising Bill Clegg, Eric Cross, Jim Edwardson (Chair), Mike Green, Desa Lilic (Deputy Chair) and Janet Wheeler is currently responsible for the RSS. A draft constitution with formal procedures for the election of a Committee will be submitted to RSS members later this year.
