Leadership Series: Leading for Sustainable Strategic Systems - Reflections on innovation in healthcare with Dr Nadeem Moghal

Date/Time: Thursday 28 February 18:15-20:00

Venue: Spence Watson Lecture Theatre, Armstrong Building.

Affordability, workforce morale, technology will save the world! Narratives in UK healthcare create wicked problems for system leaders.  How does a local health economy work through these narratives together to become sustainable? Join Dr Nadeem Moghal, Newcastle MBA graduate, to explore his personal experience of innovation and values-based healthcare to gain new perspectives on the future of workplace change.

Dr Nadeem Moghal has held a number of senior medical leadership roles, and atypically for an NHS doctor, in a number of diverse organisations; each a fire greater than the last. He was most recently the Executive Medical Director at Barking hospitals excepting a period in 2017 when he was being treated for high grade B cell lymphoma that revealed itself as a testicular mass - initially confused for responsibility matching hyperplasia. The cancer care was outstanding, the experience appalling: emasculating surgery; excruciating bone screaming needles; stomach wrenching chemotherapy; life threatening sepsis; burning exhausting radiotherapy. The message from the universe - before returning to cosmic dust, do want you want, not what others want of you.

Nadeem’s DNA has been re-ordered through the challenging leadership roles in the NHS, testing the theoretical learning from his MBA, the Institute of Healthcare Improvement, The NHS Leadership Academy, The Harvard Kennedy School of Government and many brilliant people.

He is focused on embedding measurable medical professionalism. He works with doctors in difficulty as well as mentors and coaches doctors who wish to become the best they can be, using the framework of modern medical professionalism.

Because the world needs another journal, he is establishing the millennial friendly Journal of Medical Professionalism.

As Senior Clinical Fellow at The Nuffield Trust he is progressing medical professionalism and engaged in healthcare regulation.

As Clinical Director for Innovative Professional Learning @RCPath, he is supporting the development of quality improvement and testing a model to overcome resistance to report error and harm - a key source for learning and improvement.

He is a Non-Executive Director for an ambitious rapidly growing health care group and substantial general practice provider. Information flow, digital innovation and integrated care is the strategy for sustainability.

He breathes in by reading and breathes out by debating, writing, blogging and vlogging.
